Hell on Earth

So a version of Edvard Munch’s “The Scream” sold at auction this past week for $119.9 million. The highest closing price of any piece of art to date. I’ve always loved the painting (and it’s various parodies) but the record auction got me thinking about it’s meaning. The seller, Petter Olsen said “The scream shows for me the horrifying moment when man realizes his impact on nature and the irreversible changes that he has initiated, making the planet increasingly inhabitable.” That’s one man’s take. For me, The Scream represents a kind of personal hell on earth which I feel could be defined as that moment when you realize you’ve been too picky to settle for things in life but too afraid to get what you really want.

Toasters in 2012

Toasters still need to come a long way. The slots are just too short for any bread other than your perfectly formed slice of Wonder. Sure, long slot toasters exist but I challenge you to find one under $50 that isn’t cheaply made and tarted up with nonsense digital features. Am I just too much of a gourmet? Are there so few people out there eating slices of bread from real loves? Maybe I should launch a business to become the Dyson of toasters.

Soy milk charge

Is it just me or is it completely bunk that Starbucks and several other coffee chains charge 60 cents to substitute soy milk for good ol’ cow milk? In the grocery store, a 2 quart container of soy milk seems generally 25% more expensive than regular milk (e.g. $2.50 vs $2.00) if different at all. The rationale must be that people that prefer soy milk are uppity yuppies that will gladly pay the premium. I guess that means you and me.

Ikea Returns

We all know how many pieces can come in the box when you buy something from IKEA. But what happens when you want to return a box that you opened? You can usually return it without a problem but only after the employees who handle returns check if you put back every piece. So what’s the problem then? IKEA doesn’t provide a separate line for people who want to return things unopened vs. those that do. So if you ever want to stand in line for easily a half hour to return a pot, then IKEA is your store.

There’s a cashier at Dunkin’ Donuts at the Madison and Wabash store in Chicago that will remember whatever coffee you last ordered for when you come in next time, even weeks later. I’m the large ice coffee with cream guy. Obviously this helps speed up operations and my ability to get what I want and go. I wonder how much her memory has translated into customer loyalty and therefore sales.
